AUGUST 11 – 19, 2022
Notes received from David Jensen via MapShare Garmin
Thursday, August 11: Loaded nine cargo bags and paddled them downstream 5 km on the San Josef River to south east side of San Josef Bay, left them there and went back for my gear.
Saturday and Sunday, August 13 and 14: Weekend has been stormy and tough going. On Saturday I worked the north Palmerston cove area, bagged 2-300 lbs (150 kg). Hoping by Tuesday will be able to travel across San Josef Bay. Guessing I won’t see the sun until at least Wednesday. Have to conserve battery life --.communication minimal until then.
Tuesday, August 16: Made it across San Josef Bay. Wow, glad I don’t have to do that again in this weather! It’s time to set up camp and get water. There’s a lot of debris. I’m on the Isthmus of Hanna Point.
Late afternoon: the sun is out! Among lots of other stuff, I’ve found two immovable objects – a 3000 lb propane tank (old) and a tractor tire with rim.
Wednesday, August 17: It’s a glorious morning. Will start the cleanup shortly, there’s easily a full bag of debris, plus larger debris strings (40 or 50 floats). Bears and wolves are busy, saw a bear last night and a wolf in the wee hours.
Friday, August 19: Been working around two bears which is adding to the cleanup challenge. I got some great close up bear pics! Had hoped to wrap up today but staying extra day to tidy up.
Late afternoon: All done here total about 400 lbs (1.5 bags – lots of Styrofoam makes for lighter bags) plus 50 floats and 100 lbs of rope.
