Cape Scott Park and the Scott Islands
David Jensen, July 2024
Most of my summers are spent on a paddleboard cleaning up marine debris on the remote coastline of Northern Vancouver Island, in and around Cape Scott Park and the Scott Islands. If you wonder why I do what I do, you can read about it here.
For those of you unfamiliar with this amazing corner of our country, and those who have tried to track me on a map, or who have wondered where I disappear for weeks and months at a time, here’s a little 101 class.
Cape Scott Park
Cape Scott Park is a provincial park located at the northwestern tip of Vancouver Island, 563 kilometres from Victoria.
The park stretches from Shushartie Bay in the east, westward around Cape Scott and south to San Josef Bay. This magnificent coastal wilderness has more than 115 kilometres of ocean frontage and includes some wonderful remote beaches, e.g., Nels Bight, San Josef Bay, Guise Bay and Lowrie Bay.
The Scott Islands
The Scott Islands are located about 10 kilometres off of Cape Scott Park. This chain of islands includes Lanz Island, Cox Island, Satine Island, Beresford Island and Triangle Island along with several smaller islets.
The islands and the surrounding marine environment are protected under the Scott Islands National Wildlife Area, established under the Canada Wildlife Act.
